Devon is primarily an agricultural county blest with a long coastline which links it romantically and historically with sea-faring - witness the rise of Plymouth since 1691. The north coast has indpiring cliff scenery; on the south the sea penetrates with warm inlets, dear to holidaymakers. Wedged into the heart of the county is the picturesque farmland of the New Red sandstone. Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks preserve the beauty of some of the remotest and wildest countryside in England.
